Mercy League Haiti
Who We Are
We are a faith-based, humanitarian organization intent upon developing innovative solutions to the problems of abject poverty and economic injustice that plague that people of Haiti. Most Haitians are simply seeking to survive the day and have no thought of hope for the future. Mercy League Haiti believes that change is possible, but people need to see a way forward– they need help to take the first step out of the cycle of poverty. We seek to "restore the way," giving back to them their God-given rights of dignity and freedom to pursue a life of their own choosing.
Our three areas of focus are:
- Providing children living on the streets of Port au Prince with a safe place to live and vocational training.
- Assisting already existing orphanages in distress with funding, program assistance, and food aid.
- Engaging the youth of Haiti in business development by partnering with them in new business ventures and leadership development.
We believe that following Jesus means joining him in championing the cause of the poor and oppressed by walking among them and learning their stories. Only when we become aware of the plight of the people of Haiti will we be moved to action. As citizens of a privileged nation, it is our right and honor to walk with and assist our oppressed brothers and sisters, making available to them the hopes given to us simply by being born.
The Earthquake
On Tuesday, January the 12th, 2010 the largest earthquake in over 200 years rocked Haiti’s capital city, Port-au-Prince. A combination of inferior structural engineering and poorly-produced construction materials left thousands of buildings totally defenseless to withstand the quake. The outcome has been unspeakable. In a matter of mere minutes the landscape of this fragile nation, already reeling from other more recent disasters, was forever changed. It is feared that more that one hundred thousand lives may have been lost in this catastrophe.
There is a massive relief effort currently under way. Mercy League Haiti is participating in the effort by gathering medical supplies and funding to support our Haitian staff that is currently doing their best to offer aid. Please consider donating through the paypal link here on our website.
Additionally, Shane Mattenly, the founder of our mother organization, Mercy League International, is on the ground in the Dominican Republic and is soon to enter Haiti with a team of relief workers and medical supplies. And, in the next several weeks, some of our very own local representatives will also be going into the country to assess the damage and to bring encouragement to our loved ones there. More updates to come.
NEWS UPDATE (1/20/2010):
Since the earthquake, we have heard through contacts that Madam Paul and the children are (miraculously) unharmed. A trip is in the works for next week to Haiti. While there, MLH will make sure The Good Samaritan has an adequate food and water supply. If you wish to donate specifically to Madam Paul and The Good Samaritan, please make a note of this if you donate through Paypal, or on the memo line of your check.
